Gathering Stones Where Night Caught Us

“If you people who went to school in America knew that Americans would only protect their citizens, why did you not educate us to ask the devil to save our lives? We will vote for the uneducated person who has the country at heart to be our leader. It is far better to follow the devil you know than the angel you do not know.”

Portia A. Booker

Sei. W. Nyaquoiyeabar was born and lives in the Republic of Liberia. A talented storyteller of fiction and local history, he wrote Gathering Stones Where Night Caught Us, his debut novel, inspired by his unforgettable experiences during the first Liberian civil war. Caught in the midst of rebels in Nimba County, Nyaquoiyeabar kept day-to-day notes about political and guerilla activities from the outset of the conflict until it ended. With humor and biting satirical prose, he deftly captured the harsh reality that average citizens faced at the mercy of military and political leaders. He crafted an anti-war, civil rights, and gender rights messages that speaks loudly to everyone.

Nyaquoiyeabar, a dedicated high school chemistry teacher, has taught science and math for many years at the Ganta United Methodist Mission High School in Nimba County. A family man, community leader, and inventor, he has designed and built a compressor used by farmers to extract oil from palm nuts.

Nyaquoiyeabar has a forthcoming title, "Under the Palm Tree Education" (2011).

The satire and humor are great, and the insight into human nature is brilliant. It makes you cry, it makes you laugh. Everyone should read this book. —Visions of Black Life
