AHLP's style guide usage
Africana Homestead Legacy Publishers uses the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition (CMS, 15th) as its primary style guide. We recommend that authors consult this resource before starting their work. It is especially important for both nonfiction and fiction writers to use the style guide to properly develop their work:
- to create the structure of the book with the correct components in each section--front matter, text, end matter
- to review grammar and word usage rules
- to properly format notes, a bibliography, or reference list
- to modify an existing work created with another style guide, such as a dissertation or previously published book or article
- to review rules on in-text quotations and block quotes
- to replace complicated language or jargon with more simply written phrases and sentences
- to properly punctuate
- nonfiction and fiction prose
- numbered, unnumbered, or bulleted lists
- dialogue in creative writing
AHLP custom style guide
AHLP''s Editorial Department has prepared the AHLP Custom Style Guide as a short primer especially to help writers of nonfiction. Some of the information applies to all types of writing. Editors compiled the AHLP Custom Style Guide to clarify AHLP preferences when the Chicago Manual of Style shows more than one option in their writing and editing guidelines and rules. Get Adobe Acrobat Reader, version 5.0 or later.
We also advise authors to review AHLP production guidelines when preparing their manuscript for submission. Familiarizing themselves with allowed text formatting and preparation titles, captions, and notes for illustrations will help individuals avoid unnecessary work and speed the production of book.
Other style guide usage
If an author requests editing of their work using a different style, such as APA or MLA, we will consider those requests on a case-by-case basis. We are more likely to provide this option to academic authors who work and publish in certain disciplines.
Plain language writing
Academic writers should also be aware of the plain language movement. The information age dictates a style that is accessible by more readers. See the website www.plainlanguage.gov for more information and writing resources. Especially if you are writing for a general adult audience, an audience of government officials, or other policymakers, we urge you to adopt a more simple style.
